Before you text
There’s a bit more to texting
Toll-free numbers can call right away, but SMS is a different story. Toll-free is no longer a shortcut around registration — it now has its own verification process.
Texting from a toll-free number requires verification
Carriers require every toll-free number used for texting to be verified. Unverified numbers are heavily filtered and capped at low daily and weekly limits, while verified numbers unlock far higher sending volumes. As of January 1, 2026, new verifications also require additional business details — such as an EIN or business registration number. In short: toll-free is now held to a similar standard as 10DLC, so plan to verify before you rely on SMS.
Already have your number? Verify it for texting.
Once your toll-free number is provisioned, submit a verification request so your messages send at full volume and avoid carrier filtering.

Toll-free number FAQs
Can I use a toll-free number for both calling and texting?
Yes. A toll-free number handles voice calls and SMS/MMS on the same number. Calling works right away, while texting requires toll-free verification before you can send at full volume.
Which toll-free area codes are available?
In the US and Canada the available prefixes are 1-800, 1-833, 1-844, 1-855, 1-866, 1-877 and 1-888. The 1-800 code carries a one-time $100 setup fee; the others have no setup fee. You can pick preferred codes on the request form, or leave it blank and we’ll assign one.
Is a toll-free number the same as 10DLC?
No. Toll-free is a separate messaging track and is not part of 10DLC brand and campaign registration. Toll-free numbers use their own verification process to send text messages, and it’s no longer a shortcut around registration.
Do toll-free numbers need verification to text?
Yes. Carriers require every toll-free number used for texting to be verified. Unverified numbers are heavily filtered and capped at low volumes, while verified numbers unlock much higher throughput. As of January 1, 2026, new verifications also require additional business details such as an EIN or business registration number.
